Creating a culture of college and higher education
is one of the primary goals of the Baccalaureate School for Global
Education. Fostering the necessary academic skills and
providing important information regarding universities in order
to successfully complete the college admissions process occurs
throughout both the Middle Years and Diploma Programs. Our developing
program currently consists of the following components:
- Individual College Advisement
Students are able to schedule individual appointments with Peter
Wilson, BSGE’s College Advisor, after-school, Monday-Friday
to discuss various aspects of the college admissions/financial
aid application process. Graduating seniors and juniors
are encouraged to have at least two appointments per semester
with their college advisor.
- Spring Kaplan SAT Preparation Course
Kaplan will conduct a 12-week SAT Preparation Course at BSGE
for juniors in preparation for the Spring 2006 SATs. Classes
are held on Saturdays with the approximate cost for the course
falling between $400 and $500 per student.
- College Admissions/Financial Aid Workshops
for Parents and Students
Throughout the fall, evening workshops facilitated by Peter
Wilson are offered to BSGE families, exploring a host of college-related
topics including college/university admissions criteria, standardized
tests, financial aid, Community and Service/CAS requirements
and financial planning for college.
- Kaplan Practice PSATs and SATs (Spring 2006)
Kaplan will administer free Practice PSATs for 9th graders and
free Practice SATs for 10th graders in spring 2006. The
practice exams are used as indicators for BSGE students and family
members to gauge student strengths and necessary areas of improvement
with regard to the SATs.
- The College Readiness Program at Sunnyside
Community Services
Created in February 2003, Sunnyside Community Services’ College
Readiness Program prepares high school students and recent graduates,
ages 14-21, for the college admissions process. The free
program is designed to allow participants to receive a well-rounded
understanding of the system of higher education in order to make
the appropriate academic choices that will benefit them in the
future. Through regular and advanced SAT classes, college/university
admissions and financial aid workshops, math tutorial, college
essay and application building sessions and individual advisement,
students become well-versed on college admissions criteria, build
their skills for standardized examinations (SATs), improve their
writing, locate various scholarship opportunities and complete
necessary applications for college/university admissions and
financial aid.

- Sarah Lawrence College Creative Writing Elective
and After-School Seminars
Through a special collaboration with the prestigious liberal
arts institution, students from Sarah Lawrence College’s
Graduate Writing Program facilitate Creative Writing Elective
classes for BSGE students during the Fall and Spring terms while
an intense After-School Creative Writing Seminar for juniors
is conducted once a week throughout the school year.
During the late spring, 9th, 10th and 11th graders have the
opportunity to discuss college admissions criteria, campus life,
study-abroad programs, financial aid availability, scholarships,
internships and special majors with college admissions officers,
representatives and alumni from over 40 colleges and universities
at BSGE’s College Fair.
- Freshman Readiness Workshop
The ultimate guide to transforming from a high school senior
to a college freshman, graduating BSGE seniors will participate
in a five-hour workshop in early June that explores the academic,
social and financial issues students often encounter when beginning
at a college/university and throughout their college career.
- College Application-Building Summer Workshops
In preparation for their senior year and the college admissions
process, Peter Wilson facilitates a highly focused six-week college
application-building course where participants learn how to narrow
down their college/university search, work on their essays/personal
statements, improve short-answer college application responses,
complete student profiles, assess college profiles and decipher
FAFSAs, CSS Profiles and the financial aid application process.
In addition, BSGE has developed a unique relationship with the
newly- created non-profit organization, the LEDA (Leadership
Enterprise for a Diverse America) College-Bound Community (CBC). The
LEDA CBC is a supplemental program for exceptionally bright,
highly motivated New York City students selected in the 10th
grade to be part of a 14-month College Preparatory Component
consisting of two seven-week summer sessions, after-school classes
and tutorials as well as college application/financial aid consultation
and internships. Three BSGE students were accepted to the
LEDA CBC this past May. For more information, contact leda@LEDA2003.org.
