After spending a considerable amount
of time exploring Chuck Close’s work and doing my
brother’s acrylic portraits, I decided to work on
another medium, ceramics. Since architecture is my
strongest aspiration, I created clay vessels to study space,
shape and form. It’s interesting how the inner and
outer part of the vessel actually compare to structures
(architecture). I was inspired to choose an architect whose
work truly motivated me and Frank Gehry’s architecture
always perplexed me because it is very unique. The “Fred
and Ginger” buildings in Prague are the most interesting
of Gehry’s work as there is a lot of contrast between
the two structures. When viewing my pieces, the comparison
between Gehry’s work and mine is apparent. Understanding
architectural space by studying vessel space is the greatest
strength that I have achieved in my work this year. In
addition, the diversity in different mediums is also another
strength that I have as an artist. I have experimented
with prints, acrylic paintings, oil paintings, drawings
and now ceramics.
There
have been several setbacks in my work this year as well.
In the beginning of the year, I had a difficult time achieving
great quality work due to the fact that I had not discovered
my theme. Furthermore, as this was my first time experimenting
with clay it was difficult to get accustomed to this new
form of art. However, both problems eventually faded away
with experience and research, and I was able to create
more pieces of aesthetic quality and also pieces that had
meaning. |
