Art
is an international language between the artist and viewers. Examining
cultural views of Chinese females is the main goal of my
artwork. I attempt to teach others of the life
I lived. A smile forms on my face when I see viewers
thinking about my work. Viewers’ thoughts are
precious to an artist. The strength of my artwork is
exploring biases towards Chinese females. Therefore,
I researched extensively about feminism and acts against
female civil rights, in order to expand my knowledge on the
cultural and societal issues. For example, the One-Child
Policy in China led to more anti-feminism or decreased women’s
advancement in the community. In my artwork, the fetus,
babies’ head and embryo have been symbols of the lost
souls of abandoned female babies.
While having
a conceptual strength, technical skills are a weakness. I
struggled with human anatomical problems. Luckily,
to overcome this weakness I researched on human anatomy and
practiced with gesture drawings and sketches.
Kiki Smith,
Wang Jinsong and Gustav Klimt allowed me to explore various
media and texture. Smith
used her well-rounded skills to depict human barbarianism
through printmaking, drawing and sculpture. On the other hand, Wang Jinsong
conceptually portrays her Chinese- American culture through paint. Evoking
an emotion in my viewers is another reason I create artwork, similar to the texture,
pattern and colors Klimt used to portray love. In order to incorporate
my learning, with these three influential artists, I read articles and information
on females’ roles.
